Gerard Pique Under Investigation Over Spanish Super Cup Deal with Saudi Arabia

Gerard Pique Under Investigation Over Spanish Super Cup Deal with Saudi Arabia

Former Barcelona and Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has been officially placed under investigation by a Spanish court regarding his involvement in the controversial relocation of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia. The investigation focuses on the agreements Pique's company, Kosmos, brokered with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which secured a 40 million euro (£34 million) fee for Kosmos and 400 million euros (£340 million) for the RFEF.

  The Alleged Illegalities

Judge Delia Rodrigo, who is overseeing the case, cited "possible illegalities with criminal implications" in the agreements. The investigation has intensified since audio recordings of conversations between Pique and then-RFEF president Luis Rubiales were leaked in 2022. These recordings reportedly reveal details about the negotiations and agreements that have now come under judicial scrutiny.

 Pique's Defense

Pique, 37, has consistently defended the legality of the deal, denying any wrongdoing. He insists that the agreements were "legal" and transparent. Despite his assertions, he has now been formally included among a group of individuals under official investigation for their roles in the matter.

 Developments in the Case

The investigation gained momentum in March when RFEF offices were raided by authorities. Rubiales, who had been defending the legality of the deal alongside Pique, was arrested upon his return from a trip to the Dominican Republic in April. Rubiales had already resigned from his position at the RFEF in September following a separate scandal involving Spain forward Jenni Hermoso. He is currently facing trial for sexual assault related to that incident.

 Wider Implications

The probe extends beyond Pique and Rubiales. Pedro Rocha, the current RFEF president who succeeded Rubiales, is also under investigation. The focus remains on the lucrative deal that saw the Spanish Super Cup moved to Saudi Arabia, first in 2020 and then again in 2022 after a brief hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Impact on Football and Pique's Career

The relocation of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia has been a contentious issue within the football community, drawing criticism for prioritizing financial gain over sporting integrity. Pique, who played twice for Barcelona in the Saudi-hosted Super Cups before retiring in November 2022, now faces significant legal challenges that could impact his post-football ventures.

As the investigation continues, the football world watches closely. Pique's staunch defense of the deal and the ongoing legal proceedings highlight the complexities and potential repercussions of high-stakes agreements in sports. The outcomes of these investigations could have far-reaching effects on how football deals are conducted in the future.
