Sean Penn Reflects on Post-'Milk' Misery and Hollywood's Shifting Attitudes
**Sean Penn Reflects on 15 Years of Unhappiness on Film Sets Post-'Milk'; Critiques Modern Creative Restrictions**
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Sean Penn revealed that his 2008 film "Milk" was "the last time I had a good time" on a film set. He added, "I went 15 years miserable on sets." Despite earning critical acclaim and his second Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of the openly gay politician Harvey Milk, Penn believes he could not take on the role today. The actor pointed out that the debate over straight actors playing queer characters has become too contentious in Hollywood.
Reflecting on whether he could play Harvey Milk in 2024, Penn stated, "No. It could not happen in a time like this. It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination." His comments highlight ongoing discussions about artistic freedom and representation in the film industry.
